Preparing for a claim before a loss occurs

Update October 2021: The article originally linked in this post is no longer available.

I agree with all 3 of Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Donelon’s tips for preparing for storm season. For one thing, taking a home inventory before a loss occurs is definitely a good idea. In my experience representing policyholders, the carrier always requires a detailed itemization of your damaged contents, even in the event of a total loss. For example, if you have $50,000 in contents/personal property coverage, the carrier will gladly accept your premium payments each month without requesting an inventory. However, in the event of a total loss you will have to provide proof of your possessions and their values before the carrier will pay a contents claim. Taking care of this issue will give you piece of mind now and pay off in the future.
